Creating a separate post because replying in the comments seems to hide it on a long thread. I've been building a facial recognition tool for Rhodes community photos and it flagged a match between someone in this 1946 photo and a face from my Aunt Vida's collection. Can anyone confirm?https://rhodesli.nolanandrewfox.com/identify/ab087576-bdab-4d97-95f6-c3617d072069/match/a772360a-64f6-4daf-8312-f...
I'm reviewing some old photographs of that came from my aunt Vida Capeluto (she was my grandmother Betty's Aunt). There is one that has what I believe is Solitreo on the back. I've not been able to translate it successfully. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I'm trying to determine who this is.
I was curious in the earlier post about the Jewish Family Homes map of the Juderia. I noticed that at the bottom right it had Nissim and Mussani Capeluto families living near each other. Does anyone know if the 1920s Italian census had addresses like in the 1930s one? Can anyone make out what was written in Hebrew or Solitreo at the top? Now I know those maps were supposed to be from around 1930 o...
Of late, I've been going through all the records I can find on the Capeluto family to see if I can piece the branches together. One person I'm hoping to see if anyone has any information about is **Stella Levy** ( Estrea Levi). I have a bit of information about her in the 1920s and 1930s Italian censuses and the Holocaust records, but not enough to figure out how her parents fit into the larger Rh...
Something I've been thinking about recently. A couple years back I was discussing the Mossafer ( Moussafir Mosafir ) family with Sherry Mossafer Rind , and she mentioned Rabbi Nessim Abraham Mossafer (who I believe was the 1st cousin of my Great Great Grandmother the Hanula Mousafir who married Abraham Capuano) had a bunch of records and history of the Mossafer family in his personal collection, a...
Another issue, in addition to the Yitzhak Cohen (1860) / Yitzhak Capeluto (1849) I found when reviewing the records is the names are switched for Haim son of Jacob who died in 1813. In fact, if you look at the stone it says the person who passed away was Jacob son of Haim. https://www.facebook.com/groups/tracingthetribe/posts/10161258795620747
So I've been trying to piece together the connections between the different branches of the Capeluto family, and I noticed an error on the website for the Rhodes Museum. Specifically, for Yitzhak Capeluto, who died in 1849, when you click on his tombstone, the image that comes up is for Yitzhak Cohen. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this or have the image they could share for Yitzhak Capeluto...
I had a question regarding naming conventions for children from Rhodes. I’ve noticed that for many families the tradition was the oldest son, Behor, was named after the paternal grandfather and the oldest daughter, Behora, was named after the paternal grandmother. Then the second son was for the maternal grandfather and the second daughter was for the maternal grandmother. Additionally if the fath...
I noticed Claude Benatar had been sharing a couple of really good digitally available books/articles about the community. One I recently found online was this text by Marc Angel on the history of Rhodes Jews that’s fairly in depth.
I'm curious does anyone who has researched the Capeluto family know much about the branch/branches that ended up in Egypt from Rhodes? I ended up going down a bit of a rabbit hole after someone posted a question to the Sephardic Trees group. Does anyone has any information about that part of the family? https://www.facebook.com/groups/822268661238831/posts/3124093851056289/
Has anyone considered trying this method to help identify unknown people in photos from the Rhodes community? It seems like there is a good starting dataset of faces between some of these Facebook groups and some of the other records and genealogical research. Any thoughts?
I've recently been going through some of the old pictures of my Great Great Aunt Vida Capelluto. I found two identical postcard (I think from the period of Italian colonization). One was addressed to her, and one was addressed to Leon Capeluto (my Great Grandfather/her brother). I was hoping someone could help me translate the messages on the back of them.
I was visiting my family for Thanksgiving in Tampa and there was a mysterious picture of a relative at my Great Uncle Nace Capeluto. Can anyone help identify who this is?Nace’s father was Leon Capeluto born in Milas and his mother was Victoria Capuano born in Rhodes. Appreciate the help!
